1969 De Tomaso Mangusta

1969 De Tomaso Mangusta

Here's rare Italian vintage supercar produced by De Tomaso, it's a Mangusta built in 1969. 401 Mangustas were built, 250 of the 401 cars left in existence, according to the three available registries and this one of them.

The word "mangusta" is Italian for "mongoose", an animal that can kill cobras. It was rumored that the car was so named because De Tomaso had some talks with Carroll Shelby to replace the Shelby Cobra with a racing car to be built in Italy by the Argentine-born De Tomaso, but no deal was signed since Shelby became involved in the Ford GT40 racing program. Nevertheless, Alejandro de Tomaso and Carroll Shelby were friends and business is business, so it is also rumored that the first handful of engines for the Mangusta may have come from Shelby.

Vehicle History:
This car was originally owned by a gentlemen in Santa Maria, California. He apparently took the car to Hall in Paramount, California for some pretty cool upgrades (radiator & fans, Spicers, stainless tanks, side mount gas cap, intake manifold and carb). In 2006 he sold the car to another gentlemen in Santa Barbara, California. I bought the car in 2008 from the fellow in Santa Barbara. It was in non-operational status per the DMV and I trailered it home. But the car was complete and unmolested, and was a good starting point for this project. The car has less than 1000 miles on it since the restoration.
