1969 De Tomaso Mangusta

1969 De Tomaso Mangusta

Here's rare Italian vintage supercar produced by De Tomaso, it's a Mangusta built in 1969. 401 Mangustas were built, 250 of the 401 cars left in existence, according to the three available registries and this one of them.

The word "mangusta" is Italian for "mongoose", an animal that can kill cobras. It was rumored that the car was so named because De Tomaso had some talks with Carroll Shelby to replace the Shelby Cobra with a racing car to be built in Italy by the Argentine-born De Tomaso, but no deal was signed since Shelby became involved in the Ford GT40 racing program. Nevertheless, Alejandro de Tomaso and Carroll Shelby were friends and business is business, so it is also rumored that the first handful of engines for the Mangusta may have come from Shelby.

This stunning 1969 twin head light car is an original Red with Black example and was delivered to it's first owner in California on the 22nd May 1969. He owned chassis US69640 well into the 1980's before it was sold to it's 2nd Owner also a Californian resident. Recent work includes Engine, Halfshaft and Gearbox rebuild including polished casing. The history file includes the original owners drivers journal which specifies the Mangusta's maintenance from new! Possibly the best Mangusta on the market today.
